New Arena at Seattle Center Construction Update

Current construction work is primarily demolition of the arena interior and drilled piling.  This phase of the project will generate the most disruptive noise and vibration during demolition.

Arena Interior – Structural demolition of the arena interior from the north end to the east/west buttresses is complete.  Work will continue south and is projected to go on for the next several weeks.  This will include Saturdays and Sundays.  Hauling operations for this work will continue until 10pm, Monday-Saturday.

Interior installation of the temporary roof support has started and will continue over the next several months.

North Side – Installation of temporary roof support steel has started. Excavation and lagging will begin next week. This work is being done during daytime hours only and includes Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm.

South Side – Utility potholing and cut/cap activities on the SW corner of the project continues and is projected to be finished next week.  Drilled piling started this week and will continue through the month of August.  This work is being done during daytime hours only and includes Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm.

West Side – Drilled piling continues on the west side of the arena and is moving south. An additional drill rig will begin work in the SW corner of the site within the next two weeks. This work is being done during daytime hours only and includes Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm.

East Side – Drilled piling in the SE corner continues and is moving north.  This work is being done during daytime hours only and includes Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm.

1st Ave N – A new traffic signal at 1st Ave. N and Thomas St. has been installed and is activated.  The new protected bike lane on the west side is complete and open.

The sidewalk and curb lane on 1st Ave N between John St. and Thomas St. is closed for the duration of the south parcel/tunnel work.  For more info visit: https://bit.ly/2Kihibd

The King County Metro bus stop located on 1st Ave. N between John St. and Thomas St, has been relocated to south of Denny Way.  This bus stop is projected to return to its original location on 1st Ave N between John St. and Denny Ave. in the fall.

South Parcel (surface lot south of Pottery Northwest) – Tunnel construction is projected to begin mid-July.

Construction activities for tunnel work on the South Parcel continue.  Construction fencing has been installed and installation of a new storm water vault at the south end of the property is underway.  Foundation is placed and the precast vault will be set next week. Utility work within the site will commence next week as well.

The John St. sidewalk between Warren Ave N. and 1st Ave. N is closed for the duration of the south parcel/tunnel work.  The sidewalk and curb lane on 1st Ave. N between John St. and Thomas St. is closed for the duration of the south parcel/tunnel work.  For more info visit: https://bit.ly/2Kihibd

Installation of the sound wall is underway and completed on John St.  The sound wall is being placed around the project on John St. between the SE corner of the 1st Ave. N garage and 1st Ave N.  From John St. the sound wall will turn north on 1st Ave. N and end at the south wall of Pottery NW.  An additional wall has been added to the south side of the Northwest Pottery building.  The graphic below shows the location of the sound wall in green.

 

As with the North Parcel (arena), placement of the sound wall will include the sidewalk and pedestrian access will be closed for the duration of the tunnel build.
